Dry cleaners: Not just for shirts and pants

Dry cleaners do a great job of keeping our everyday clothing clean and well maintained, but clothes aren’t the only items that dry cleaners can help you with. There are plenty of other household items that need regular cleaning and they can be easy to forget about, even though they’re right under our noses.

Drapery. Fabric drapes and curtains should be vacuumed regularly using the bush attachment. Dust and dirt, from inside and outside your house, can cling to your window coverings without you even noticing. The heavier and more voluminous the fabric is, the more particles can get trapped in it. Once a year drapes should be removed and dry cleaned – especially if there is cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke in the house. Pay special attention to curtains in the kitchen, where cooking grease and odours can penetrate the fabric quickly.

Sofa and chair cushion covers. You and your guests sit on your sofas and chairs all the time, yet we rarely think to give them a good cleaning. Like drapes, they need to be vacuumed gently on a regular basis and dry cleaned annually. Dirt and grease from our bodies can build up on sofas and chairs and flipping the cushion won’t hide the problem for long!

Bedding. Duvets, comforters and blankets should be cleaned at least twice a year due to the heavy usage they are subjected to. While down duvets and cotton-stuffed comforters can be washed at home if you have a large washing machine, the filling is liable to become clumpy in a dryer.

If you’re concerned about your bedding and other household fabrics being exposed to the harsh chemical solvents that are used in most dry cleaning processes, consider going green. Many dry cleaners, such as Oakville’s Neat Dry Cleaners, are turning to environmentally friendly dry cleaning processes such as GreenEarth Cleaning. GreenEarth uses liquid silicone – or liquid sand – to clean thoroughly, without harming you, your clothes or the environment.
